JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The Mayor of Surabaya Tri Rismaharini will lead the city administration to close the Dolly red-light district in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday (June 18) night.
Risma has earlier said the closure of Dolly is in line with the Surabaya City bylaw No. 7/1999 that bans the use of building as place of prostitution.
The closure, however, has been strongly opposed by the sex workers, procurers and local residents who earn for their lives from Dolly areas. They rejected the closure and refused to move out from Dolly even though they have been pledged to receive a compensation of Rp5 million per person.
Dolly is one of the biggest red-light district in Southeast Asia. According to the Surabaya Social Agency, there are at least 1,187 sex workers and 311 procurers living in Dolly.
Besides Dolly, Risma had previously closed two other red-light districts in Bangunsari and Klakah Rejo. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
