JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption court has Monday (Jan. 11) sentenced graft suspect and former Minister of Religious Affairs Suryadharma Ali to six years in prison after proven guilty in
committing graft in the scandalous haj management.

In addition, panel of judges presided by Aswijon also ordered Suryadharma to pay Rp300 million in fine or serving additional three months imprisonment.

The court’s verdict, however, is lighter than the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) demands. Previously, the KPK’s prosecutor team demanded 11 years of jail term to Suryadharma.

KPK’s prosecutor team also asked panel of judges to order Suryadharma to pay Rp750 million in fine plus paying
Rp2.325 billion in substitution to the State losses.

Suryadharma served as Minister of Religious Affairs for the 2009-2014 period under Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) administration. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
