JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) had on Thursday (Oct. 2) evening, signed two newly government regulations in lieu of law (Perppu) to revoke the indirect election of governors, regents, and mayors by the Regional Legislative Councils (DPRDs).
SBY, in his speech last night, said the first Perppu is Perppu No. 1/2014 to revoke the newly Regional Election Law No. 22/2014. The second Perppu No. 2/2014 is to amend the newly Regional Administration Law No. 23/2014.
SBY has involved ten things for the sake of improving of the direct regional election. He also said that the Perppus also stipulate about the implementation of simultaneous direct regional election in 2020.
SBY has time to submit the two Perppus to the House of Representatives (DPR) to seek its approval within the next 30 days.
As reported earlier, SBY and his Democratic Party harvest critics from the public community after the Party’s disappointing maneuver to walk out ahead of a voting on the controversial Regional Election Bill (RUU Pilkada) in the House plenary session last week. The President Democratic Party’s walk out has “help” Prabowo Subianto’s coalition to win the voting and deliberated the regional election by the DPRDs.
The newly Regional Election Law No. 22/2014 itself now becomes the dispute at the Constitutional Court after civil society groups filed a request of judicial review on the controversial law. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
