JAKARTA (Yosefardi) –  The opposition group affiliated to losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto controls the leadership of the House of Representatives (DPR) for 2014-2019 period after winning the election conducted in the first House plenary session on Wednesday (Oct. 1) evening.

Setya Novanto (Golkar) was elected as the Speaker of the House. While four elected deputies are Fadli Zon (Gerindra), Agus Hermanto (Democratic Party), Fahri Hamzah (PKS), and Taufik Kurniawan (PAN).

Prabowo coalition won the election of the House leadership through an acclamation after five factions of political parties in his coalition plus President SBY’s Democratic Party agreed to propose one similar package of the House leaders. The five factions of Prabowo coalition are Golkar, Gerindra, Democratic Party, PKS, and PAN.

Four other factions of political parties, affiliated to President-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, meanwhile walked out from the plenary session as a protest of undemocratic mechanism of the election. They are PDI-P, PKB, Nasdem, and Hanura.

Commenting to the election, Law Expert Refly Harun, in an interview with a television station, revealed that the package mechanism of the election of House leadership is undemocratic.

Refly then deplored the Constitutional Court’s decision that confirmed the implementation of the newly Legislative Institution Law (also known as the MD3 Law) No. 17/2014. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
