JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Slamet Effendy Yusuf, the head of the Nahdlatul Ulama and a politician from Golkar Party, has passed away at the age of 67 on Wednesday (Dec. 2) evening, Kompas.com reported.
Slamet’s wife Siti Aniroh, who is also secretary general of the NU’s women wing organization, confirmed to Kompas this morning. According to Siti, her husband died at around 11:00 pm of local time in Bandung, West Java.
Slamet’s body will be buried in his hometown in Purwokerto, Central Java.
Born in Purwokerto, on January 12, 1948, Slamet served as the head of the NU, the largest Muslim organization in the country, for 2010-2015 period. He also served as the head of the Indonesian Ullema Council (MUI) for 2009-2014 period.
Prior to his years in NU and MUI, Slamet served as the Speaker of the People’s Consultative Council (MPR) for 1988-1993 period. He was also a Golkar lawmaker at the House of Representatives (DPR) for several periods since 1992. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
