JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Muslim organization in the country, has asked the central government to set the 22nd of October as the day of Santri (Islamic boarding school students).

The request was delivered directly by the Chairman of the NU Said Aqil Siradj in a national gathering of NU’s Ulemas in Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, Sunday (June 12).

According to Said Aqil, NU’s founder Hasyim Asyari was declared the so-called jihad revolution against colonialism back in Oct. 22, 1945.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, meanwhile, stated that he has still been considering the request. The President also asked the leaders of all Muslim organizations to further discuss the matter with the Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
