JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Newmont Mining Corp has appealed the government of Indonesia to international arbitration for mining export restrictions policy.
Newmont had earlier last month stopped all activities of processing and production for copper concentrate at Batu Hijau mine, West Sumbawa, as the storage facility is on full capacity.
Newmont was expecting the government’s decision or willingness to resume the export of copper concentrate, or to revoke the ban policy imposed in January this year, but it did not happen.
“PTNNT (Newmont’s Indonesian operations) and its shareholders are left with no option but to seek relief through international arbitration to ensure our stakeholders’ jobs, rights and interests are protected,” Martiono Hadianto, president director of PTNNT said in a statement.
