JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has today (Jan. 20) inaugurated Nazir Foead as the new Head of the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) at the State Palace, Jakarta.

Nazir’s appointment is accordance to the Presidential Decree No. 3M/2016 signed by President Jokowi on January 18, 2016.

Present in Nazir’s inauguration were Vice President Jusuf Kalla, some cabinet members and other high-profile figures from other state institutions.

Nazir Foead is known as an environmental activist, forester and conservation biologist, whereas he spent his earlier professional career from late 1980s in the interior of Kalimantan, Maluku and Papua.

He is the former conservation director of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in which managing over 300 staff in 26 conservation sites since 2010. After his years in the WWF, Nazir serves as the Indonesia Initiative Coordinator at the Climate and Land Use Alliance since February 2014.

He received his Bachelor degree in forestry from Gadjah Mada University (1992), and Master degree in conservation biology from the University of Kent, UK (1996); and intensive courses in Sustainable Forest Management in Gottingen University, Germany (1995) and DNA analysis in Indiana University (1997).
