JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The prosecutor team from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) demanded nine years imprisonment to Romi Herton, the Mayor of Palembang (South Sumatra), for bribing Akil Mochtar, graft convict and former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK).
In addition, the KPK’s prosecutor team also demanded panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court to order Romi to pay Rp400 million in fine or serve additional five months imprisonment.
As for Romi’s wife Masyito, KPK’s prosecutor team demanded panel of judges to drop six years imprisonment plus to pay Rp300 million in fine or serve additional four months imprisonment.
KPK’s prosecutor team also demanded panel of judges to punish Akil’s close aide Muhtar Effendy with seven years imprisonment. Muhtar, according to KPK’s prosecutor, allegedly influenced witness to give false testimony during the trial of Palembang post-election dispute at the Constitutional Court.
The case, dragging Romi, his wife, and Muhtar, is a part of the bribery scandals related post-election dispute that implicating Akil Mochtar.
Akil, the 54-year-old former Golkar Party lawmaker, has been punished with a life sentence after proven guilty for committing corruption and money laundering acts related to post-election disputes in fifteen regencies. According to panel of judges, Akil was proven of taking bribes and gifts worth up to Rp57 billion in connection with post-election disputes in fifteen regencies during his term as Constitutional Court Justice.
