JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The independent team, established by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to resolve recent conflict between the National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), has suggested President to cancel the nomination of graft suspect Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as new Chief of the National Police.

The suggestion was delivered by the Head of the independent team Syafii Maarif in a press briefing on Wednesday (Jan. 28).

Syafii, moreover, said President Jokowi should consider to nominate new Police Chief candidate to replace Budi Gunawan.

While Jimly Asshiddiqie, member of the independent team, added that President cannot be impeached should he cancel Budi Gunawan’s nomination. The former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court as well as law expert from the University of Indonesia (UI) assured the President to not worry to the impeachment threat from political parties at the House of Representatives (DPR).

Commenting to the suggestion from the independent team, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno said that President has already considered the option of canceling Budi Gunawan’s nomination.

As reported earlier, friction between police and the KPK was heating up after the nomination of Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as new Police Chief neglecting KPK’s decision that named him as graft suspect. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
