JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Trash is still a critical issue for Jakarta city as a report revealed around 280 tons of trash is pulled away per day from all rivers across the capital city.

This morning (October 21), Koran Tempo reported the city produces around 7,500 tons of trash per day, of which 6,000 tons are put in the Bantar Gebang landfill in Bekasi, West Java. While around 1,000 tons are recycled by people. The rest 500 tons remain contain on the rivers.

Based on the report, residents contributes 52.97% of total trash in the city, offices 27.35%, industry 8.97%, school 5.32%, traditional and modern markets 4%, and others contibutes 1.4%. The Jakarta city only operates 6 excavators to pull away trash from rivers.

Jakarta’s governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and vice governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) allocates Rp2.5 trillion for public works this year, of which a half is used to buy 23 excavators. Jokowi-Ahok order the city’s public works office to clean up the city’s rivers until December 2014.

The city administration is also in efforts to to restore 13 rivers and 2 canals (at east and west part of the city), to overcome floods in the city. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
