JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) had officially closed its sharia banking operation in Indonesia since last week (10/7).
Indonesian central bank Bank Indonesia has issued Governor Decision No. 15/68/Kep GBI/2013 and Letter No. 15/1258/Dpbs about HSBC’s Indonesian Sharia Business Revocation.
“Indonesian sharia banking market is still strongly growing and our decision to close HSBC Amanah in Indonesia is purely business strategy. HSBC has been operating in Indonesia since 1884 and has commitment to invest in Indonesia which is a prioritized market and focused on conventional banking services,” the company said in an announcement available to Yosefardi.biz.
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation opened its first Indonesian office in Jakarta in 1884; however the Bank was granted a new banking licence in 1968 its operations have grown to make it one of the largest foreign banks operating in Indonesia, quoting Wikipedia.
