JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The Jakarta High Court has rejected an appeal from graft convict Akil Mochtar and affirmed the ruling of life sentence in prison from the lower court to the 53-year-old disgraced former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Tempo.co reported.
Spokesperson of the Jakarta High Court M Hatta confirmed the court’s ruling on Monday (Nov. 24).
As reported earlier, The Jakarta Corruption Court had dropped a life sentence to Akil in a verdict trial on Jul. 1, 2014.
According to panel of judges, Akil had been proven of being guilty in graft and money laundering cases related to election disputes in fifteen regencies handled by the Constitutional Court. Akil was proven of taking bribes and gifts worth up to Rp57 billion.
The life sentence punishment to Akil is the first maximum punishment to graft suspect in the history of corruption eradication movement in the country. People have highly appreciated the Corruption Court’s panel of judges and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for their great job.
Akil is former lawmaker from Golkar Party prior his tenure as Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
