JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Former Vice Rector of University of Indonesia (UI) Tafsir Nurchamid has been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for being proven of committing graft act related to the Rp21 billion development project of an information technology center at the university’s library.
Panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court, in a Wednesday’s (Dec. 3) trial, also ordered Tafsir to pay Rp200 million in fine or serve additional two months imprisonment.
The verdict, however, is lighter than KPK’s prosecutor team’s demand of 5 years imprisonment. KPK’s prosecutor previously also demanded panel of judges to order the defendant to pay Rp500 million in fine or serve additional five months imprisonment.
Other than Tafsir, KPK had also grilled several figures in its investigation into the case. They are, among others, former UI Rector Gumilar Rusliwa Soemantri, UI Director of General & Facility Affairs Donanta Dhaneswara, and Director of PT Derwiperdana Internasional Irawan Wijaya.
KPK, however, has not yet named new suspects so far. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
