JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The House of Representatives (DPR) has passed the Regional Election Bill (RUU Pilkada) into law on early Friday (September 26) that erasing the direct election of regional leaders and reinstate the election of regional leaders by the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) at regency/municipality and provincial level.

In a voting, the Red-and-White coalition of losing president candidate Prabowo Subianto beat the coalition of President-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo with a landslide victory after President SBY’s Democratic Party backed off from their decision to support regional direct election. The Democratic Party disappointingly walked out from the House plenary session.

The Red-and-White coalition secured 226 votes, while Jokowi’s coalition only collected 135 votes.

The Red-and-White coalition consists of Gerindra Party, Golkar Party, PKS, PAN, and PPP. Jokowi’s coalition, meanwhile, consists of PDI-P, PKB, and Hanura.

Jokowi’s coalition and civil society groups reportedly will file a judicial review against the newly controversial Regional Election Law to the Constitutional Court. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
