JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Democratic Party might do surprise move by endorsing an alternative presidential candidate, rather than supporting Joko “Jokowi” Widodo or Prabowo Subianto, the two strongest presidential candidates, in the July 9 presidential election.
Talking to the press this morning (May 14), Amir Syamsuddin, one of key leaders from Democratic Party, revealed that his party is currently eyeing Sultan Hamengkubuwono X as its presidential candidate.
Amir, who is also Minister of Law & Human Rights, said Democratic Party intends to endorse Sultan as a survey results released by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) pointed that Sultan’s electability could compete with Jokowi and Prabowo.
Amir also noted about the low electability of eleven contestants of the Democratic Party’s primary compared to Jokowi and Prabowo.
As reported earlier, Democratic Party will announce the winner of its primary on May 15. Democratic Party will need additional support from other political parties should the party endorse its own presidential candidate.
According to KPU’s official counting, Democratic Party ends up the legislative election in a distant fourth position with only securing 10.19 percent votes. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
