JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The National Anti-Drugs Agency (BNN) has expressed its support to the decision of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo for refusing to grant the clemency for 64 convicted drug dealers sentenced to death.
BNN’s Spokesperson Police Sr. Comr. Sumirat Dwiyatno called President Jokowi’s decision as a good effort in combating drug dealers in the country. Sumirat said BNN hopes the President’s decision will give a deterrent effect or a shock therapy to drug dealers.
About 15,000 people in Indonesia died in vain due to drugs, Sumirat said.
President Jokowi confirmed on Tuesday (Dec. 9) that he will refuse to grant clemency to 64 convicted drug dealers sentenced to death. In his speech at the Yogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada University (UGM), he said he wants to give a shock therapy to the drug dealers.
According to Coordinator Minister for Politic, Law, & Security Affairs Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, the government will soon execute five out of 64 death-row drug convicts this month. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
