JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – A miserable report published on Wednesday (October 30) has shocked the readers as the report says almost half of Indonesian people are drinking unfit water.
Koran Tempo, quoted statements from the Director of Settlements and Housing at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Nugroho Tri Utomo, reported that around 108 million Indonesians have still consuming water unfit for drinking.
Based on the data from the Central Statistic Agency (BPS), the population of the country has reached 244.2 million people in 2012.
According to Nugroho, almost 85% of water wells in the capital city of Jakarta is unfit to drink, and the condition is exacerbated by low public hygiene and bad sanitation.
Nugroho stated that the central government has allocated Rp2.9 trillion fund this year to improve water quality. He said the government needs around Rp200 trillion to accomplish the target of giving public the access to clean water and good sanitation by 2019. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
