JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court has Monday (June 30) charged a life sentence to 53-year-old disgraced former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Akil Mochtar, a maximum punishment in the history of the country’s judiciary.

Akil was sentenced as he was proven of being guilty in graft and money laundering cases related to election disputes in fifteen regencies.

Akil was proven of taking bribes and gifts worth up to Rp57 billion in connection with election disputes in fifteen regencies handled by the Constitutional Court.

The panel of judges rejected the demands of the prosecutor team from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to order Akil to pay Rp10 billion in fine and to revoke Akil’s constitutional rights to vote and to be voted in any election in the country.

The life sentence punishment to Akil is the first maximum punishment to graft suspect in the history of corruption eradication movement in the country. People have highly appreciated the Corruption Court’s panel of judges and the KPK for their great job.

Akil, who is former politician from Golkar Party, meanwhile, said that he will file an appeal to the Jakarta High Court against the punishment. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
