JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The Democratic Party, led by then President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), criticized the recent maneuver launched by Golkar Party Chairman Aburizal “Ical” Bakrie to reject the government regulation in lieu of law No. 1/2014 known as the Direct Regional Election Perppu.

Daily Chairman of Democratic Party Syarief Hasan reminded Ical and his Golkar Party that there was an agreement between Democratic Party and the Red-and-White coalition (KMP), including Golkar as one of its members, to pass Perppu 1/2014 into law.

While Prabowo Subianto’s Gerindra Party, another member of the KMP, has yet revealed its decision on whether or not to join Golkar’s maneuver to reject Perppu 1/2014.

As reported earlier, Golkar’s chairmanship congress (munas) in Bali has made some decisions, including Ical’s re-election and the party’s decision to reject Perppu 1/2014 for the purpose to reinstating the Indirect Regional Election Law No. 22/2014.

During the Bali Munas, Ical spoke out to the attendees that once again Law 22/2014 is applied, the regional elections to elect governors, regents, and mayors across the country will be conducted by Regional Legislative Councils (DPRDs).

Back on Oct. 2, SBY issued Perppu 1/2014 to replace Law 22/2014. It was his response to the public outcry over Democratic Party’s decision to walk out from the House plenary session which led the KMP to win the voting to passage the controversial Law 22/2014. (haryantosuharman@yosefardi.com)
