JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Panel of judges at the Supreme Court (MA) has dropped heavier punishment, from life sentence to death sentence, to Wawan aka Ewing, 39, one of the two murders of Fransisca “Sisca” Yofie, a branch manager of PT Venera Multi Finance.

Panel of judges, Artidjo Alkostar as presiding judge and two other judge members, Gayus Lumbuun and Margono, read the punishment on Wednesday (Nov. 12).

In their verdict, panel of judges mentioned the murder as sadistic and lacking of humanity. So therefore, the judges hope the death penalty to the murder will give a deterrent effect.

Responding to the Court’s verdict, Commissioner of the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Sandra Moniaga said she rejected the death penalty.

“Sometimes we found mistake during the trial. Can you imagine when the defendant has been executed to death while later we found a novum (new evidence) that show us that the real murder is not the defendant?” Sandra commented.

Previously, Wawan and his nephew Ade Ismayadi aka Eful, 25, have been punished with life sentence imprisonment by the Bandung District Court. The lower court concluded the two defendants were found guilty for killing Sisca.

However, the watchdog group Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) revealed that they have found irregularities in the murder. IPW earlier warned the police to work extra hard on the case in order to reveal the real mastermind of the murder. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
