JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Irman Gusman, 52, has reclaimed his seat as the Speaker of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) for the period of 2014-2019 after being re-elected in the election conducted in the DPD’s plenary session on Thursday (Oct. 2) evening.

In the voting, Irman beat his strong contender Farouq Muhammad, a DPD member from West Nusa Tenggara (DPD). Irman secured 66 votes, while Farouq only got 53 votes.

While Farouq Muhammad and GKR Hemas (wife of the Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X) were elected as as Irman’s deputies.

The DPD itself, meanwhile, will also take a crucial role should the 2014-2019 People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) accept the recommendation from the previous MPR to amending the 1945 Constitution.

Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, on Feb. 11, 1962, Irman Gusman reclaimed his seat as DPD member from West Sumatra province after securing enough votes in the April 2014 legislative election.

Prior to the July 2014 presidential election, Irman declared himself as president candidate. He then participated in the primary of President SBY’s Democratic Party to elect the party’s president candidate for the July election. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
