JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Former Vice Rector of University of Indonesia (UI) Tafsir Nurchamid is facing his first trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday (August 6) in a graft case related to the Rp21 billion development project of an information technology center at the university’s library for the budget period of 2010-2011.

In the Wednesday’s trial, the prosecutor team from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has charged Tafsir for violating Article 2 Paragraph 1 and Article 3 of the Anti-Corruption Law No. 31/1999 already amended with Law No. 20/2001 juncto Article 55 Paragraph 1 point 1 of the Criminal Code (KUHP).

Tribunnews.com reported that the prosecutor team, in Tafsir’s indictment, also mentioned other names alleged to commit corruption act altogether with the defendant. They are former UI Rector Gumilar Rusliwa Soemantri, UI Director of General & Facility Affairs Donanta Dhaneswara, Tjahjanto Budisatrio and Dedi Abdul Rahmat Saleh from the UI’s business unit PT Makara Mas, etc.

As reported earlier, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had named Tafsir as suspect in the case on June 14, 2013. Tafsir had been detained by the KPK since March 14, 2014.

Other than Tafsir, the KPK had previously summoned Gumilar, Donanta, other witnesses for a questioning. The KPK, however, has not yet named another new suspects in the case. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
