JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – The Jakarta Police office has yet named poet Sitok Srengenge as suspect for alleged sexual harassment and rape cases over a student of University of Indonesia (UI), arguing lack of evidences.
Talking to the press on Wednesday (March 12), Chief of the Jakarta Police’s Detective Unit Sr. Comr. Heru Pranoto said the Police still needs further investigation to get more evidences.
As reported earlier, Sitok, also known as curator of the Salihara art community led by senior journalist Goenawan Mohamad, was questioned by the Police for the first time last week.
The case itself emerged four months ago after the victim identified as a student from University of Indonesia had filed a report against Sitok to the Jakarta Police office on November 29, 2013.
The victim admitted she had been sexually harassed and raped by Sitok, then she was granted with a baby. Other than that, two other young girls also disclosed that they were victims of sexual harassment by Sitok.
The legal punishment on rapists in Indonesia has so far failed to give a detterent effect. The National Commission for Women (Komnas Perempuan) reported that 4,645 rape cases took place in 1998-2010.
