JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Along with public pressures, the Jakarta Police office for the first time on Wednesday (March 5) questioned noted poet Sitok Srengenge for the allegations of sexual harassment and rape over a student from University of Indonesia (UI).

The case emerged four months ago and Sitok is now questioned as witness. One victim identified as a student from University of Indonesia had filed a report against Sitok to the Jakarta Police office on November 29, 2013.

The victim admitted she had been sexually harassed and raped by Sitok, then she was granted with a baby. At the time Sitok acted as curator of the Salihara art community led by senior journalist Goenawan Mohamad.

Another 2 young girls also disclosed that they were victims of sexual harassment by Sitok. The legal punishment on rapists in Indonesia has so far failed to give a detterent effect. The National Commission for Women (Komnas Perempuan) reported that 4,645 rape cases took place in 1998-2010 priod. (haryantos@yosefardi.biz)
