JAKARTA (Yosefardi) – Pollycarpus Priyanto, convicted murder of human right activist Munir Said Thalib, got 6 years jail sentence reduction to 14 years. The Supreme Court granted its judicial review on Oct. 2, 2013.

Panel of the judges for the judicial review were Sofyan Sitompul, Dudu Duswara, Machmuddin, Salaman Lutan, Sri Murwahyuni dan Zahruddin Utama. This is the second judicial review on the case as previously the Supreme Court granted the Attorney General Office’s (AGO) request to give him 20 years prison time.

M Assegaf, legal representative of Pollycarpus, however, expressed his disappointment on the Supreme Court’s ruling. He insisted that his client deserved nothing but acquittal decision. Assegaf argued that Pollycarpus has no motive to kill Munir.

In December 2005 the Central Jakarta District Court sentenced Pollycarpus 14 years imprisonment for premeditated murder of Munir. He was found guilty of responsible to the arsenic containment that caused death to the human right activist during flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam.

On Oct. 4, 2006, the Supreme Court, in cassation process, found Pollycarpus not guilty for the murder and dropped him 2 years sentence for document forgery. AGO then filed a judicial review against the cassation’s verdict. (indrab@yosefardi.biz)
