PHOENIX (Yosefardi) – PT Freeport Indonesia, subsidiary of Freeport McMoRan, has resumed open pit mining and concentrating activities at its Grasberg mine, Papua, Indonesia.

This follows approval from energy and mineral resources ministry on June 21, 2013. “The resumption of production activities is being conducted in phased approach,” the company said in a statement Monday (June 24).

The government suspended Grasberg operations following the May 14, 2013 tragic accident occurred outside the area of mining operations.

Freeport said the estimated impact on production approximated 115 million pounds of copper and 115,000 ounces of gold. The impact of the ongoing suspension of underground operations, meanwhile, approximates 1 million pounds of copper and 1,000 ounces of gold per day.
