NUSA DUA (Yosefardi) – The government will soon launch a new 5,000 MW all-coal fired power plant to boost domestic consumption of coal.

Energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik said the program is outside the scope of the second 10,000 MW program being developed. “I just proposed it to the president,” he said after giving keynote speech at the 19th Coaltrans Asia 2013.

Jero said domestic market for coal will increase substantially as the country’s energy mix would change to 33% coal by 2025 from 24.5% at the moment. “Hopefully the 5,000 MW program will boost domestic demand,” Jero said.

The first 10,000 MW program was dominated by coal-fired power plants, while in the second 10,000 MW geothermal and coal are equally big.
